Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY

The City Attorney's Office (CAO) is made up of talented attorneys and support staff that work on a variety of interesting and complex legal issues. The CAO enjoys a collaborative and collegial work environment and is looking for an exceptional attorney to join our team to provide legal counsel to the City Council, city departments, and boards and commissions. The Assistant City Attorney may represent the city before administrative agencies, in municipal or water court, trial and appellate courts, at board and commission meetings, in real property transactions, or numerous other specialty areas. The CAO offers the opportunity to be involved in challenging, meaningful, and often cutting-edge legal work in service to the Englewood community.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The listed examples of work are not intended to be all-inclusive. They may be modified with additions, deletions, or changes as necessary to meet the current needs of the City Council and the City of Englewood.

The following functions are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed functions and/or may be required to perform additional or different functions from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.
  • Research issues and write memos as directed by the City Attorney.
  • Provide legal advice to city departments, administrative staff, and boards and commissions.
  • Prepare ordinances and resolutions.
  • Perform other legal services under the direction of the City Attorney or Deputy City Attorney.
  • Other legal duties as assigned to meet the needs of the city.
REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Licensed attorney in the State of Colorado in good standing (or admission pending, by the start date).
  • General knowledge of Colorado law.
  • Quality legal writing and research skills.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated organizational and administrative skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships and work well in a team environment.
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES
  • Knowledge of applicable law, court procedures and the rules of evidence sufficient to prepare and litigate cases in court and represent the city in administrative hearings.
  • Knowledge of analysis and research techniques sufficient to gather information, secure and analyze desired information, and formulate logical recommendations.
  • Knowledge of policy, ordinances and charter requirements sufficient to advise on matters that encompass a wide variety of municipal law issues.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of general law sufficient to collaborate with other attorneys.
  • Ability to independently adapt, interpret and apply written guidelines, precedents and standardized work practices to a variety of situations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to prepare professional, concise and grammatically correct written documents.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, various representatives of public or private entities, policy making bodies, and members of the public.
  • Ability to exercise initiative, judgment, and decision making in solving problems and meeting organizational objectives.
  • Ability to effectively use the Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Work is performed in a standard office environment, requiring sitting for extended periods of time, and occasional light lifting (up to 15 lbs.). Job requires visual and physical capabilities to perform data entry, filing, and to work on computers and associated equipment for prolonged periods of time (4-6 hours daily). SALARY RANGE

$85,508 - $128,263; Anticipated Hiring Range is between $99,000 - $110,000/Annual Rate
