The American Heart Association’s Internship Program provides college students the opportunity to work in the field of public health at a premier non-profit organization with an impeccable reputation for promoting a healthy lifestyle free from cardiovascular disease and stroke. Under close supervision and mentorship of experienced public health professionals, students will apply classroom learning to practical problems. Throughout this process, students will develop and strengthen skills such as public health policy, health communication, and community engagement. Part of the Community Impact team with a focus on Advocacy.

Internship Overview:

  • Time Commitment: 20-25 hours per week
  • Internship Duration:1/21/25-5/2/25
  • Hybrid-Intern must be based in one of the 5 boroughs of New York City area. Onsite office work on Tuesdays.
  • Salary: $23.00 per hour

Internship Outcomes:

  • Orient students to the principles and practices of public health planning, advocacy, and evaluation.
  • Expand student’s understanding of public health by increasing their awareness of cultural needs, and challenges of connecting resources to diverse populations.
  • Students will learn the benefit of strategic partnerships between healthcare professionals, businesses, and community-based organizations to improve population health.
  • Deepen student’s understanding of the social determinants of health such as income, education, built environment, and access to medical care.

Responsibilities

Tasks could include things like the following:

  • Community event planning and participation
  • Assistance with developing event materials
  • Volunteer Management
  • Public health research
  • Establishing/maintaining strong community partnerships
  • Program development and implementation
  • Leadership and board support

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled undergraduate, graduate, or recently graduated students with an interest in contributing toward a voluntary health organization.
  • Interested in public policy, public health, political institutions, and media advocacy.
  • Bilingual speaking preferred, but not required.
  • Comfortable making cold calls to community leaders and potential supporters.
  • Effective oral, written, and presentation communication skills.
  • Ability to work professionally in corporate and non-profit environments.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office programs.
  • Ability to learn quickly, focused attention to detail, and a reliable work schedule.
  • Excellent oral, written, and presentation communication skills.
  • Ability to work remotely in professional settings.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Ability to use virtual platform programs (Zoom, MS Teams)
  • Learners who are motivated to seek challenges within a fast-paced, dynamic setting.
  • Required: Reliable WiFi Connection
  • Experience/courses in health advocacy/public policy strongly desired.
  • Minimum availability of 20 hrs/wk, M-F between the hours of 8:30am-5pm.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship, now or in the future. For any roles working remotely, the work must also be performed inside the United States, not in a foreign country.
