Job Description

The Managing Editor will edit and proofread scholarly publications, exhibition and permanent collection didactics, the members magazine, ephemera, and digital communications, among other materials for departments across the museum. Upholding quality standards through house style guides, this role focuses on developing text that is accessible to a wide audience while also managing the work of the Senior Editor and Associate Editor.

Responsibilities

  • Manages the work of the Senior Editor and Associate Editor by setting priorities, assigning tasks, and reviewing their work as needed.
  • Edits and proofreads exhibition and collection catalogues, working with internal and external authors, curators, and designers.
  • Edits materials for exhibitions and rotations, including labels, booklets, digital components, gallery guides, brochures, and signage, working closely with Curatorial, Education and Interpretation, Digital Information Technology Services, Exhibitions and Publications, Collections Management, Design and Architecture, and Exhibition Production Departments.
  • Serves as lead editor for Cleveland Art magazine, working closely with the contract proofreader.
  • Performs editorial and proofreading tasks as needed for departments across the museum, to include but not limited to digital communications, marketing materials, affiliate group communications, philanthropy reports, ephemera, and wayfinding.
  • With input from the department, maintains the didactic style guide, magazine style guide, publications style guide, and list of art terms.
  • Performs administrative duties related to the Library of Congress, the US Copyright Office, external requests regarding CMA copyrighted materials, and royalties from outside distributors.
  • Keeps current on editorial practice and issues affecting publications in all media.
  • Travels to attend conferences and training.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements and Key Competencies

Bachelor’s degree required, with coursework in art history a plus, and at least five years of editorial experience, preferably in a museum or other cultural institution. A master’s degree in English or certification in editing is preferred.

Excellent organizational, interpersonal, research, and decision-making skills, as well as the ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines and to focus on several projects simultaneously. Flexibility to adjust to an often-changing production schedule and handle last-minute projects with poise and efficiency.

Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite, and the Chicago Manual of Style .

Excellent writing skills. Professional proficiency in editing and proofreading, determined through an aptitude test.

Salary range: $65,000 - -$70,000
