Job Description and Duties

Attention Sign Language Interpreters! Do you want to continue to grow in your career and make an impact for those that are hearing impaired? We are seeking a personable individual that can both communicate and translate using sign language for hearing impaired and severely speech impaired incarcerated persons. This position may require to travel to other correctional institutions, if needed by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR). Overtime hours may be necessary when required for emergency circumstances.  In addition, the selected candidate will receive a healthy pension plan, up to 14 paid holidays per year, and medical/dental and vision benefits.

Will also consider Temporary Appointments (TA) - Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications for the classification, but do not currently have eligibility on an employment certification list by having taken and passed an examination, may apply as a TA.  TAs are limited to a duration of 9 months within a 12 consecutive month period. In order for a TA to become permanent, individuals must take and pass the related examination, and thereby become eligible from a certification list, within 9 months of TA. Individuals who successfully obtain eligibility prior to the expiration of the TA will not be required to re-compete in a competitive process for permanent appointment to that position

Individuals who are eligible for a Training and Development assignment may also be considered for this position(s).

Limited Term 12 months; may be extended up to 24 months or may become permanent.

Working Conditions

California Medical Facility (CMF), located in a unique spot in Vacaville, CA. Unique as in being surrounded by many areas for family fun, exercise, touristy adventures and more. Approximately 35 miles east of downtown Sacramento, approximately 53 miles west of Pier 39 in San Francisco, and if you want to meet in the middle you can swing by Napa which is approximately 30 miles west. 


When entering the grounds you will see the beautiful green mountains from Pena Adobe which is only a ten-minute drive from CMF and a great place to play disc golf, go hiking, archery, take family pictures, have a picnic and much more. Also located near by are the Vacaville Outlets for all your shopping needs.

Candidates new to CDCR or the Division of Juvenile Justice are required to submit to a background investigation process utilizing Live Scan fingerprinting, and Tuberculosis testing prior to appointment followed by departmental annual Tuberculosis testing/evaluation thereafter.
