Base pay range

$120,579.00/yr - $195,200.00/yr

Duties

The Appellate Staff is seeking experienced attorneys to represent the United States, its agencies, and officers in civil cases in federal courts of appeals and other appellate courts. The trial attorney will brief and argue appellate cases, draft recommendations for the Solicitor General, and work with the Office of the Solicitor General to prepare Supreme Court filings.

Cases include defending against constitutional challenges, administrative challenges, tort claims, employment discrimination claims, and Bivens claims. The staff also handles separation-of-powers litigation.

This is not a remote position. You will be required to work in person five days a week.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or National
  • Must complete a Background Investigation including drug testing
  • Selective Service Registration as applicable
  • May require a temporary appointment pending background check
  • Must obtain and maintain a Top Secret security clearance, with possible SCI access
  • Pass a drug test prior to final appointment
  • Disclose financial information as per ethics guidelines
  • Subject to a two-year trial period upon permanent appointment

Qualifications

Applicants must have a J.D. or equivalent, be in good standing, and have at least 1 year of relevant legal experience. Experience requirements vary by grade level:

  • GS-13: 1.5 years
  • GS-14: 2.5 years
  • GS-15: 4 years

Preferred skills include excellent writing, negotiation, interpersonal skills, good judgment, and trial experience. Judicial clerkship is desirable.

Education

Degrees must be from accredited institutions or foreign equivalent, with proof of credentialing if applicable. All documentation must be in English or translated.
